Simple tips for small business owners to increase website traffic and improve conversion

I’ll start by asking the tough question: When was the last time you checked the stats on your website?

For a lot of business owners, a website is just a pretty thing sitting on the internet collecting dust, while they do all the leg work to promote their business. Well, I’m here to tell you this does not need to be the case. In this article, I am going to talk about some simple ways to bring traffic to your website. Yes, you still need to do some leg work to promote your business and website, but your marketing does not need to rely on that completely. Your website, if used correctly can bring in all the traffic you need, even when you’re sleeping!

But, before we even get into how to get traffic to your website, let’s just first delve into why your website might not be getting traffic:

  1. No SEO strategy:

So you created a website. But is it SEO-friendly? SEO stands for search engine optimization. Optimizing for search engines means including relevant keywords, adding meta descriptions, and improving your URLs. There is a lot of technicality that goes into SEO, but you can find a lot of relevant information online, or if you own a Squarespace website, just go read this post to get step-by-step guidance on how to do basic SEO optimization for your website.

  2. Outdated Content:

When was the last time you updated the content on your website? A website is not a one-and-done thing. As your business evolves you need to make sure you make relevant updates to your website, not to mention search engines love websites that are updated frequently!

  3. Neglecting Social Media:

Social media if used correctly, can be your site's best friend. Social media doesn’t need to be limited to Instagram. You can use Pinterest, Youtube, Facebook or any other platform that feels comfortable to you.

  4. Lack of Promotion:

Often people build a website and let it sit there. But here’s the thing, if you build it, they won't come unless you tell them to! You can promote your site through various social channels, add a QR code to your business cards, put it on your flyers and pretty much everywhere you can to broaden its reach. Oh and if you’re looking for a website you want to brag about, consider getting it designed professionally. (cough, by yours truly)

Now that you know what’s not working, let’s dig into some solutions that can help you fix it.

  1. Build and execute an SEO strategy:

Before I start building any website I spend a considerable amount of time researching keywords most used in the niche, used by competitors, and the keywords the customers are using for the given products/services.

If you’re just getting started, spend some time understanding your audience, who your target customer is, and what they need. I find that is often overlooked by business owners and the website is focused mostly on being “pretty”. If your website is pretty but it’s not getting any traffic, it’s just not doing its job.

So spend some time doing keyword research. You can use free tools like Google Keyword Planner to find keywords in your niche. Make a list or create a Google spreadsheet of keywords most relevant to your niche, then integrate these keywords naturally into your website content, including headers, meta tags, and throughout your articles. Check your H1 headings, meta descriptions, and titles, blog articles, and ensure they are keyword-rich.

  2. Regularly update your content:

It is no secret that Google loves websites that regularly update their content.

The easiest way to do that is to start a blog. A blog helps you in two ways, it allows you to showcase your expertise and it lets you add more relevant keywords to your website. You don’t have to post every day but make sure you post consistently (once a week, a month etc)

You can also keep your website updated by adding new insights, statistics, or relevant information. If you don’t have time to create new content, consider repurposing old content into different formats like infographics or videos to keep it fresh. You can also reuse content you’ve created for social media and add it to different places in your website.

  3. Post on Social Media:

I’ll be honest, I am guilty of this mistake. Social media is not my forte, and I often skip posting. Though I am not an Instagrammer, I am a dedicated pinner. Pinterest is often ignored as a marketing strategy (probably because it has fewer opportunities to “connect”), but if you are in a creative field, Pinterest can be your best friend. The best part about pins is that, like blogs, they are available for eternity and show up in search engines. So even if you’re not posting regularly, someone might see your old pin and contact you.

The one thing I’ve realized when it comes to Social Media, is it’s mostly a trial-and-error game. You need to try different platforms and different forms of content to find out what works for you. If there is something you absolutely don’t like doing, you may skip it or try and see if it works for you (like talking on camera, just does not work for me - will I try it YES, will I stick to it - Maybe Not!). Consistency is key when it comes to Social Media, so if you find yourself unable to stay consistent with your chosen form of content or platform, it may maybe time to try something different.

  4. Promote yourself & your business:

As an introvert, I understand how hard it can be to talk about your work and promote yourself. But if you don’t promote, people will never see the work you do. You might have the most beautiful website, designed specifically for conversion but if you’re not sending everyone you ever meet to visit your website, well it simply isn’t going to work. (P.S: If you need a swoon-worthy website, that you can be proud to show off, I can help!).

I think the hardest thing I ever had to do was to talk about what I do. But the more I realize how I can impact businesses and help business owners show up online with confidence, it has inspired me to talk about it.

You started your business because there is something you love doing and are proud of it. Start talking about it. Tell everyone you know and send them to your website. Keep the conversation going by encouraging visitors to signup for newsletters or email marketing by offering freebies, discounts, or doing a giveaway!

Your website can be the biggest asset for your business, and like any good investment, it can give you a tenfold return if used correctly. I hope you’re feeling inspired to do some work on getting traffic to your website.
