First off, I took a break from blogging. No, not on purpose! Let it be known that I absolutely love writing these blogs hoping that it’s helping someone somewhere in the world! I couldn’t get to blogging coz I made the classic mistake of ignoring content creation while I worked on a project. The website in question is complete and you can check it out in my portfolio!

Now let’s get to the point.

If you have a website that you DIYed or you’re thinking of making a new website, there are a few sections you must include. Now there is an art to deciding which section is highlighted and which is not, but here we are only covering which sections you should include and what you should include in them.

The Hero Section

The Hero Section or the main banner section can feature a striking visual, such as a high-quality image, engaging video or some cool animated text (see our hero section for example). A concise and compelling headline, accompanied by a supporting subheadline, communicates the primary message or value proposition. Now, I’ll go against the norm and say you may or may not put a CTA button here. For example, if you are a photographer and you want to showcase a slider of your images in the hero section, you want to keep it free of clutter. In this case, you can place a CTA and value proposition right below the hero section.

A short description of what you do:

Use this section to clearly articulate your core products or services, emphasizing the value they bring to your audience. Use straightforward language and avoiding jargon, to ensure clarity for a diverse audience. Include key features or unique selling points that set your offerings apart. This section will serve as a snapshot, offering visitors a quick understanding of your business and compelling them to explore further.

A detailed services section

The services section of your website should offer concise and clear descriptions of each service, accompanied by high-quality visuals. Consider organizing services into categories for easy navigation and highlight your unique selling propositions. I’ve often seen DIY websites listing out all their services on the home page which makes the layout extremely cluttered. Group together similar services and provide a clear navigation link for details. Clearly communicate what sets your services apart from the competition and encourage the user to know more.

A portfolio section or case studies

Include anything that shows how you do what you do and why you do it best. This can include a variety of projects that highlight the breadth and depth of your work. You can include before and after visuals, or any data for the results you’ve achieved in (coz we all like stats!). This is where you tell a potential client or customer that you can get them the results they desperately need! Don’t add to much detail though, keep it short and sweet!

Social Proof

Think about this, how many times have you bought a product or hired a service provider, based on reviews? Well, we all depend on reviews to value a product or service. If people are raving about your services, there is a high chance that anyone visiting your website will be convinced to invest with you. As a service provider myself, I often find it tedious to follow up on my clients and request reviews. I’ve found that having clear timelines after which you request reviews, email templates, and a form that asks the right questions and makes it easier for your client to respond, greatly helps in getting those coveted testimonials. And while you’re emailing, don’t forget to ask for Google reviews! Having reviews on your Google business profile can work wonders for your SEO (more details on that on a separate post maybe)

And there you have it. These are the main sections that you must include in your website (preferably in that order). Now audit your website and see if you’re missing anything! Happy designing! :)
