5 things you need on your Shopify product page to increase sales

Recently, I have been digging deep into Shopify web design. Shopify is slowly becoming the standard for e-commerce websites, and the more I work on it, the more strategies I am discovering to help businesses grow and sell more, beyond just the initial website design.
One of the things I find people often miss in Shopify is optimizing their product pages. I get why that happens, Shopify makes it so easy to setup a product page. Upload a few photos, write a description, and you’re done. But what I have learned as a Shopify website designer, is that you can (and should) use the product pages effectively to increase sales.
Here are the few strategic changes you can do on your store today to turn browsers into buyers.

1. Clear, benefit-driven product descriptions

It’s no secret that most shoppers scan. Your descriptions need to work hard and fast.

How do you do that?

  • Focus on how the product solves their problem

  • Use short paragraphs, bullet points, and highlight key info

  • Incorporate SEO keywords. This is often overlooked but product descriptions is one the prime areas where you can add keywords naturally. Don’t ignore this space

2. High-Quality, versatile product images

Ever heard of show not tell? When it comes to your Shopify website design, instead of adding one static image of the product, try to show the experience.

How do you do that?

  • Include multiple angles, close-ups, and lifestyle shots

  • Use consistent lighting and or edit your photos for a professional and polished look

  • Optimize image names and alt text for Shopify SEO

Controversial take: Use AI to optimize your product photos. I have experimented with it quite a bit and when backgrounds are cluttered and budget is low, AI seems to do the trick.

3. Transparent pricing, variants & inventory prompts

Every element on your product page should be easy to scan and click. This is where intentional Shopify website design really shines.

One of the most crucial thing you need to be mindful of is pricing. By the time a user comes to checking the price they are already in a buying mindset. Reduce friction at checkout by clearly showing:

  • All pricing (with any sales or discounts)

  • Variant options (sizes, colors, etc.)

  • Low-stock or “limited quantity” messaging to encourage urgency

4. Social proof to build trust

When was the last time you bought something without checking the reviews? Customer reviews, star ratings, and real-life product photos show that your product delivers.

When creating Shopify website layouts for my clients, I make sure reviews are a part of the buying journey and not just an afterthought

Here are a few things you can do to draw attention to the product reviews on your site:

  • Highlight top reviews near your “Add to Cart” button

  • Include customer-submitted photos or tagged posts

  • Display UGC (user-generated content) as a carousel or gallery

5. Smart Upsells & Cross-Sells

This one is probably the most overlooked strategy but it is the most beneficial one. Strategically placed upsells are a smart way to increase revenue without adding more traffic.
With Shopify, you can increase your average order value by adding upsells to your product pages.

How does that work?

  • Recommend related products (e.g., “Pairs well with…” or “You might also like…”)

  • Offer product bundles or upgrades

  • Include a “Frequently Bought Together” section

Pro tip: Cross-sells work best when they’re visually aligned and relevant—not random, something I’ve learnt to do pretty efficiently (self promotion much, well why not!)

Final Thoughts

Your product page is your 24/7 salesperson. With the right mix of smart Shopify website design strategies, persuasive copy, visuals, and SEO strategy, you can create a product page that actually converts.
