Embracing Minimalism: In design & in life
I know I generally post about website-related stuff, but today felt like one of those days when I wanted to focus on philosophy and maybe get a little personal. If you’ve seen what I design, or if you’ve followed me on social media, you know I am a fan of minimalistic design. Clean lines, negative space, and lack of clutter are all things that call to me and are somehow reflected in everything I do.
In a world overflowing with excess, clutter, and noise, the concept of minimalism has always provided me with a sense of clarity and simplicity.
For me minimalism is not just a design trend; it's a way of life—an intentional choice to strip away the unnecessary and focus on what truly matters.
Growing up, I was always surrounded by the idea that more is better. As a South Asian, the concept of having more to feel accomplished, seen, and even loved was drilled into my mindset from an early age. I found myself caught in a cycle of constantly seeking more: more clothes, more gadgets, more distractions. Yet, having more never brought about the sense of accomplishment I expected, it rather brought a profound sense of emptiness.
It wasn't until I stumbled upon the philosophy of minimalism that I began to question this relentless pursuit of more. The more I learnt about it, the more I wanted to find ways to include minimalism in my life. I started by simplifying my surroundings and decluttering my life, anything I did not use had to go. It always surprises me to think how little we need, in contrast to how much we have - but we still end up unsatisfied and wanting more.
Including minimalism as a part of my life, has also led me to examine the clutter in my mind. It often goes unnoticed but we are constantly bombarded by distractions—social media notifications, endless to-do lists, and the pressure to constantly be productive. Days turn to months and we are often left surprised by where exactly our time went.
With time and practise, I have learned to prioritize my time and mental well-being. Throughout my day I carve out moments of stillness and solitude, allowing myself to simply be without the need for constant stimulation. I start the day with a few minutes of meditation. Lunch is spent with my phone and laptop off, focusing on the food and the joy of eating. I always used to think that I need an elaborate system to live a mindful and minimalist life, but I have realized I didn’t need to change much. Just adjusting my schedule, taking out pockets of time to clear my mind and ensuring a clean and non-cluttered environment has brought so much peace into my life. The best part is, I find my most creative ideas happen in these moments of stillness and joy!
Minimalism has also transformed the way I approach design. I have always been drawn to clean lines, simple typography, and negative space. To me minimalist design isn't just about aesthetics; it's about creating experiences that are intuitive, accessible, and purposeful. It's about stripping away the unnecessary and allowing the essence of a message to shine through. In a world oversaturated with visual noise, I feel that minimalist design can easily cut through the clutter and make a meaningful impact.
To anyone feeling overwhelmed by the chaos of modern life, I urge you to take a pause and reflect on what really feels authentic to you. It's not about adhering to a rigid set of rules or aesthetic principles; it's about embracing simplicity, intentionality, and authenticity. It's about reclaiming control over your surroundings, your mind, and your life. And in doing so, you may just discover a newfound sense of liberation, purpose, and joy!
